Series 24, Talk #2

The people of Perak especially and Malaysia generally enjoys a history rich in culture and customs warmly intertwined with the royalty and nobility. The history of the Perak sultanate begins when major chieftains agreed to invite a prince of the last Sultan Mahmud Shah of Melaka to become the Sultan of the state of Perak. It was in 1528, after Sultan Mahmud Shah lost Melaka to the Portuguese in 1511 and was seeking refuge in Kampar, Sumatra, consented to send one of his two sons, Raja Mudzafar Shah, to cross the Straits of Melaka and to be installed as the first Sultan of Perak. In comparison with other states in the Malay Peninsula, the customary traditions in Perak are somewhat unique. The ascension to the throne is neither automatic nor directly from father to son; it rotates amongst 4 families, and the monarch has to be chosen by the royal court called Dewan Negara Perak which comprises of 31 Titled Princes, Major Chieftains and State Dignitaries. On contemporary issues, palatial etiquette and the statutes of Orders and Medals will also be deliberated and discussed. These state decorations will be of particular interest to titled personages and community leaders as these are honours bestowed upon those who have contributed distinguished services to the royal family, state, and country. The speaker has also written books on these subjects which are available for sale here at discounted prices:

  1. Titles and Ceremonial Traditions of the Royalty and Nobility of the state of Perak, Malaysia (written in English) – RM400 per copy.
  2.  Adat Pusaka Raja-Raja dan Orang Besar-Besar Negeri Perak Darul Ridzuan(written in Malay) – RM120 per copy.
