Emeritus Professon Wang Gungwu

Perak Academy invites you to a talk by Prof Wang Gungwu on his growing up years. The memories of his childhood and education years, that moulded the man to what he is today – renowned historian, sinologist, writer, his works on Chinese diaspora, the countless awards conferred on him for research done on particular subjects dear to his heart.

We get to hear firsthand, the trials and tribulations, challenges and obstacles he had to overcome. The joyful moments in his life which we glimpse – his marriage and family – and, the recognition for all his hard work.

 Prof Wang, a fellow of the Academy has spoken a number of times. 24 February 2001 – ASEAN: changing China Perspectives (Series 2), 17 November 2009 – Ipoh Days (Series 11), 11 March 2011 – Southeast Asian Studies Today (Series 12), 12 March 2011 – Junzi Scholar Gentleman in conversation with Asad-Ul Iqbal Latif (Series 12) to which the Perak Academy still have callers asking for this book.

Prof Wang has written 2 books “Home Is Not Here” in 2018 and “Home Is Where We Are” in 2020. The exploration of identity and emotional perspectives, years as an academic, the formation of identity and the stories of him and his wife Margaret.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Emeritus Prof Wang Gungwu was born 9 October 1930 in Surabaya, Indonesia to Chinese parents from Taizhou, Jiangsu and grew up in Ipoh, Malaysia. He completed his secondary education in Anderson School, an English medium school in Ipoh. Wang studied history in the University of Malaya, where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He was a founding member of the University Socialist Club and its founding president in 1953.

Lecturing career:

  • University of Malaya, Singapore (1957-59) University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur (1959-68), Australian National University (ANU) (1968-1986) Emeritus Professorship; Vice Chancellor, University of Hong Kong (1986-1995).
  • Chairman of the Institute of East Asian Political Economy in Singapore from 1996-97; Distinguished Professorial Fellow (1996-2002) and Chairman (2002-2017), Institute of Southeast Asian Studies; Director (1997-2007) and Chairman (2007-2018), East Asian Institute; University Professor (since 2007) at the National University of Singapore.
  • He was awarded the Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 1991; the Darjah Dato’ Paduka Makhota Perak in 2011; Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2018; Darjah Utama Bakti Cemerlang (DSO) in 2020 from Government of Singapore. His scholarly contributions earned him numerous Honorary Doctorates from universities across the globe, and academic prizes including the Tang Prize in Sinology in 2020.
