Synopsis
What makes Sabah the most dangerous and the most promising State in Malaysia today?
Centuries of turbulent history of this most culturally diverse State underwent a makeover with the formation of Malaysia (1963) and the Association of South-East Asian Nations (1967). Amid occasional subversion, terrorism, kidnappings, piracy and other violent crimes, the Philippine claim to Sabah remains, aggravating existing disputes and disagreements.
How can policymakers overcome such deep-seated historical issues which continue to impact on Sabah and Malaysia as a whole?
The Speaker
Mr. Bunn Nagara was Associate Editor and Foreign Editor of Star Publications; Senior Analyst and Visiting Fellow at Institute of Strategic and International Studies, Malaysia (ISIS); Research Fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS); and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Fellow at the Japan Institute of International Affairs.
He held senior posts at New Straits Times; New Sabah Times; and TV3 News; was Editor of New Voice of Asia Journal; Contributing Editor of South Review; and Analyst at the Malaysian Industry, ABC (Australia) Radio; and Commentator on Asiaweek and Aljazeera. For covering the 1986 People Power Revolution, he received an NUJ citation and a Medal of Honor nominated by Philippine media and church leaders.
