YBM Tengku Razaleigh bin Tengku Mohd. Hamzah was born in Kota Bahru, Kelantan. He is the uncle to the former Raja Perempuan of Kelantan, D.Y.M.M. Tengku Anis bt Tengku Hamid. His father, Tengku Hamzah bin Zainal Abidin was the last appointed Chief Minister of Kelantan.

Tengku attended Sultan Ismail College, Kelantan before moving on to the Malay College, Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) and Anderson School, Ipoh. He received a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the Queen’s University of Belfast in 1959 and later continued his studies at Lincoln’s Inn, London until 1962. He was conferred an honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LLD) by Queen’s University, Belfast in 1982.

Tengku was the Malaysian Finance Minister (1976 – 1984) and the Trade and Industry Minister (1984 – 1987). He was also the Executive Director of Bank Bumiputra (1965 – 1970) and its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (1970 – 1976), Executive Chairman of PERNAS (1970 – 1974) and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of PETRONAS (1974 – 1976). In 1971, he led the first Malaysian Official Trade Delegation to the People’s Republic of China.

Tengku’s political career needs no introduction – having been actively involved since 1962 and is now the longest serving Member of Parliament. He is currently the Divisional Chief of UMNO, Gua Musang.

In the international scene, he was the Chairman of Asian Development Bank from 1976 to 1977 and the Chairman of the Board of Governors, World Bank and International Monetary Fund from 1977 to 1978.
